Ayrshire is the west-coast run — out to the Firth of Clyde across North, South and East Ayrshire, and on to the island weddings that sail from its harbours. It is the one part of Scotland where a ceilidh needs no explaining to anybody: this is Burns country, and the dances are still part of how the place marks an occasion.

Getting to Ayrshire

Eighty miles from Perth, so the entire county sits inside the 100-mile free-travel zone — Ayr, Kilmarnock, Troon, Prestwick, Irvine, Largs, Ardrossan and Cumnock all comfortably, and Girvan still inside it at the southern end. There is no travel charge on any of them. The far south-western tip beyond Ballantrae is the one part that falls outside, and we will price that separately and say so up front rather than fold it in quietly. The M77 makes the run an easy one; it is the last few miles to a coastal or farm venue that decide the timings, not the road down.

The rooms we play in Ayrshire

Clyde-coast hotels and golf resorts

The coast is lined with them and their function suites are generally purpose-built — level access, decent power, and either a stage or a clear end to the room. Many have a fitted sound limiter, so it is worth asking what yours is set to before settling on the full band with drums.

Farm steadings and country houses inland

The Burns-country half of the county, around Mauchline, Tarbolton and Cumnock. Converted steadings make some of the best ceilidh rooms anywhere — stone, height, and a floor that can take a Strip the Willow — but the access is usually a farm track and the power is often a generator rather than a wall socket.

Town and harbour halls

Ayr, Irvine, Largs and the smaller coastal towns all have them, and several have the sprung floors a ceilidh actually wants. The things worth checking are heating out of season and where the van can sit while we unload, which in a harbour town is rarely right outside the door.

What to sort before the night

Two things here that do not come up anywhere else we play. First, the ferries: Ardrossan sails for Arran and Largs for Cumbrae, and if your wedding is on either island the last sailing is the real curfew — it decides when the music stops, not the venue licence. Tell us the crossing when you book and we will build the night around it rather than find out at eleven o'clock. Second, the wind. A marquee on the Firth of Clyde takes weather off the sea that an inland field never sees, so lighting stands need proper weighting and we would rather over-plan that than lose a tower mid-set.

When Ayrshire books up

January is what makes Ayrshire different. Burns was born at Alloway, just south of Ayr, and Burns Night here is not a niche booking — suppers run through the back half of the month, and the Saturday nearest the twenty-fifth goes further out than any other date in our year. Book that one early or not at all. The other pinch point is golf: in a year when the Open is on the Ayrshire coast, hotel rooms and function space disappear for miles around well over a year ahead, so check the fixture before fixing a summer date.

Questions we get asked about Ayrshire

Is there a travel charge to Ayrshire?

No. At eighty miles from Perth the whole county sits inside the 100-mile free-travel zone, Girvan included, so the quote is the package price and nothing else. Only the far south-western tip beyond Ballantrae falls outside, and we would tell you that up front.

Can you play a wedding on Arran or Cumbrae?

Yes, and it is worth raising early. The ferry timetable becomes the curfew — either the last sailing decides when we stop, or we stay over and that goes in the quote from the start. Both work; what does not work is leaving it to the night itself.

How far ahead should we book a Burns Night in Ayrshire?

Further ahead than you would think. The Saturday closest to the twenty-fifth of January is the single most requested date we have, and in Burns's own county it goes first. A year is not unusual and is not over-cautious.
