Every kind of night, across Scotland

Function Bands
in Scotland

Corporate nights, birthdays, balls, Burns suppers, anniversaries and club fundraisers — a live ceilidh band with a professional caller and a full DJ set, in one booking with one all-in price. Based in Perth, working right across Scotland.

What we are, in plain terms

"Function band" usually means a covers band — four hours of songs the room recognises. That is not us, and it is better said at the top of the page than discovered halfway down it.

We are a ceilidh band and a DJ. The band plays traditional Scottish dance tunes and a professional caller explains each dance before it starts and talks the room through it while it runs, so nobody needs to have done it before. Between the ceilidh sets, and through the end of the night, a full DJ set carries the floor. One of our packages does add a live covers set on top of both; the rest are ceilidh and DJ.

What we do offer that a covers band generally does not is everything in one booking: the caller, the full PA, atmospheric lighting, setup and pack-down, and a wireless microphone for speeches — no separate DJ, no second setup, no gap in the middle of your night.

Why a ceilidh works for a function crowd

The argument for a ceilidh at a private function is not really about music. It is about who ends up dancing.

At a corporate night, a covers band tends to fill the floor with the same enthusiastic thirty people while everyone else stays at their table. A called ceilidh does the opposite: because every dance is explained as it happens and nobody is expected to know anything, the floor fills with people who would never volunteer. It mixes departments, age groups and the two halves of a room that arrived separately. At a family party it puts three generations in the same set. That mixing is the thing organisers actually want and the thing hardest to buy.

The nights we play

Corporate nights and Christmas parties

Staff nights out, awards dinners, conference socials and gala evenings. A ceilidh solves the problem every corporate night has — getting people who only know each other from meetings to actually mix.

Corporate events →

University balls and student events

Freshers’ events, society ceilidhs, graduation nights and school proms. Student crowds need no encouragement at all, which makes for some of the best nights we do.

Student events →

Birthdays and anniversaries

Fortieths, sixtieths, retirements, golden weddings. The strength of a ceilidh at a family party is that it works across three generations at once — grandparents and grandchildren in the same set, which almost nothing else manages.

Burns suppers and St Andrew's nights

The two nights in the calendar where a ceilidh band is not an option but the point. Both book earlier than anything else in the year, Burns Night especially — it is the most requested weeknight we have.

Clubs, societies and fundraisers

Rugby clubs, golf clubs, charity nights and village hall fundraisers. A called ceilidh needs no rehearsal from the room and sells tickets to people who would not come to a disco.

Packages and prices

The same packages apply whatever the occasion — a function is priced as a standard evening exactly as a wedding is. The number of musicians changes the fullness of the sound rather than the repertoire or the calling, so the choice is mostly about the size of your room.

Booking a function date

Two parts of the calendar behave differently from everything else. December is the corporate season and it books from about the spring — by October there is usually very little left, particularly in Glasgow and Aberdeen. Burns Night on 25 January is the single most requested weeknight of the year, and St Andrew's Day at the end of November behaves the same way on a smaller scale. Everything else is considerably easier than people expect, especially midweek.

Before you fix a room, the venues page sets out what we need from it — floor space, power, load-in access, sound limiters and curfew. A ceilidh needs more floor than a disco, and a tightly set limiter changes which line-up makes sense.

Questions organisers ask

Are you a function band?

Depends what you mean by the term, and it is worth pinning down. If you mean a band that plays private functions across Scotland with a full PA, lighting and a professional setup — yes, that is exactly what we do. If you mean a covers band playing four hours of chart and rock songs, no. We are a ceilidh band with a DJ, and only our Ultimate Live Package adds a live covers set.

Why book a ceilidh rather than a covers band for a work night out?

Because of who ends up dancing. A covers band tends to fill the floor with the same thirty people all evening. A called ceilidh puts everybody on the floor including the ones who never dance, and it mixes departments and age groups that would otherwise stay at their own tables all night. For a room of colleagues who half know each other, that is the entire job.

Do we get a DJ as well?

Yes, on every package except the ceilidh-only one. The DJ runs between ceilidh sets and closes the night, using the same PA and the same booking — no second supplier, no gap while one packs down and the other sets up.

Can you handle speeches, awards and a running order?

Yes, and it is routine. A wireless microphone for speeches is included as standard on every package. Send us the running order in advance — who speaks when, what needs a microphone, when any presentation happens — and the music is built around it.

How big a room do you need?

Roughly 3m x 3m for the band plus real floor for the dancing, which is more than a disco needs because ceilidh dances travel. Power, access, whether a sound limiter is fitted and what time the music must stop all matter too. It is all set out on the venues page.

More on the FAQ page. Planning a wedding rather than a function? That is the wedding band page.
