Getting to Fife

Twenty-two miles to the near edge over the M90, further to the East Neuk, and all of it inside the free zone — there is no corner of Fife that carries a travel charge. Worth knowing that the Kingdom is much bigger than it looks on a map: Dunfermline and Crail are an hour apart from each other, so we plan the run from where your venue actually is rather than from 'Fife'.

The rooms we play in Fife

Golf resorts and hotels

The most tightly run rooms we play, and generally the best equipped. Expect a firm curfew, a fitted limiter and a house AV contact who will want to talk to us beforehand — all of which makes for a smooth night once it is agreed.

East Neuk coastal venues

Small harbour-town hotels and halls with a great deal of character and not much parking. The rooms are intimate, which suits the One-Man or Duo line-up better than a full band and a wall of PA.

Farm steadings and village halls

Inland Fife has both in quantity, and several halls have the sprung floors that make a Strip the Willow feel the way it is supposed to. Steadings are usually a marquee-style problem: power and acoustics.

What to sort before the night

The East Neuk villages are the ones to think about. Streets in Crail, Anstruther and the rest were laid out well before anybody needed to park a van near a door, so we will ask exactly where we can stop and how far the kit travels on foot. Inland, a steading conversion or a marquee often runs on a generator, and generator supplies vary — telling us in advance means we bring our own distribution rather than hoping. Golf-resort curfews are set by the licence and are not negotiable on the night, so we build the running order backwards from the time the music has to stop.

When Fife books up

St Andrews sets the rhythm for the north of the Kingdom. Graduation weeks and the big golf weeks take accommodation and function rooms out of circulation across a wide radius, and when a major championship is in town it affects venues well beyond the town itself. Coastal East Neuk venues are effectively a summer proposition; inland halls and steadings run all year.

Questions we get asked about Fife

Do you cover the whole of Fife without a travel charge?

Yes — every part of the Kingdom, including the East Neuk and St Andrews, falls inside the 100-mile free-travel zone from Perth.

Our venue is a village hall with a sprung floor. Is that good or bad?

Good. A sprung floor is the best surface a ceilidh can have — it gives back what the dancers put in, and a room with one will feel livelier than a much grander room without.

We are getting married in a marquee at a farm. What do you need to know?

Whether the power is mains or a generator, how far the van can get from the marquee, and whether there is a hard floor going down. None of it is a problem; all of it is easier agreed in advance than solved on the day.
