Getting to Loch Lomond

Fifty-two miles as the crow flies, and the crow has the better route. The A82 up the west shore is single carriageway, slow and genuinely beautiful, and it does not care what time your ceremony is — so we leave earlier for Loch Lomond than the distance suggests. Everything named here is inside the free zone; the far west of Argyll and the islands are not, and we will say so plainly rather than surprise you with it.

Lochside marquees

The reason people book this part of the world. Canvas absorbs sound rather than reflecting it, so a marquee needs more PA than a hard room of the same size — the opposite of the instinct most people have.

Estate barns and boathouses

Converted stone and timber buildings, often some distance from where a vehicle can stop. Good rooms with a long carry attached, which is worth knowing before the day rather than during it.

Lochside hotels

Traditional Highland hotels with function rooms that have been doing weddings for a century. Level access, real power and, frequently, a curfew set by the fact that people are asleep upstairs.

What to sort before the night

This is generator country and midge country, and both change the plan. Generator power needs declaring so we bring our own distribution. Midges are not a joke between June and September at dusk on a west-facing shore — it affects whether doors stay open, which affects the sound and sometimes the running order. Access is the third thing: estate tracks, gates that need a code, and a long carry from the nearest hard standing to the marquee. Weather here is a working consideration rather than a topic of conversation, so cabling and any outdoor run gets planned as if it will rain.

When Loch Lomond books up

Marquee season is May to September and effectively nothing else — a lochside marquee in February is not a proposition anybody is selling. That compresses the entire year's demand into twenty summer Saturdays, which is why this is the area where dates disappear furthest ahead. Hotel function rooms run year-round and are the sensible option for an autumn or winter date.

Questions we get asked about Loch Lomond

Is Loch Lomond inside the free-travel zone?

Yes — Balloch, Luss, Arrochar, Tarbet, Helensburgh and Dunoon all are. Further west into Argyll and out to the islands falls outside it, and we will quote that separately and clearly.

Why does a marquee need more PA than a hall?

Because canvas absorbs sound instead of bouncing it back. A stone room does half the work for you; a marquee does none of it, so the system has to be bigger to sound the same.

There is a long walk from the parking to our marquee. Is that an issue?

It is a scheduling issue rather than a problem — it just means we arrive earlier. Tell us roughly how far and whether it is over grass, and we will plan for it.
