Getting to Dundee

Eighteen miles down the A90, which is dual carriageway almost the whole way. No travel charge, and no scenario in which a Dundee date needs an overnight — a one o'clock finish still has us home the same night, so a late curfew costs you nothing extra. It also means we can come back for a second look at an unusual room before the day if the venue will have us.

What to sort before the night

City-centre load-ins are the one thing to sort in advance. Most Dundee venues want the kit in through a service entrance rather than the front door, and several have a loading bay with a time limit on it, so we need to know where to stop and who has the key to the lift. Waterfront venues have improved enormously on this in the last few years. Where a limiter is fitted, ask the venue what it is set to rather than whether there is one — the number is what tells us whether a full drum kit is sensible or whether the Duo is the better call.

When Dundee books up

University ball season runs from November through to March and takes a disproportionate share of Dundee's Fridays and Saturdays. Graduation weeks in the summer do the same to hotel availability. If you are planning a city-centre function between late November and Christmas you are competing with every office night out in Tayside, and those dates are gone earliest.
